My father was killed in an industrial accident when I was just thirteen. After
the shock of his loss passed my mother decided to sell our suburban home and
move to the country away from everything that reminded her of dad and the
work he had done. She was also of the opinion that in a rural community I
would have a better environment for growing up without a father.
She found a nice house on a small acreage about a mile from a little farming
town far from the city where I had been born. We moved as soon as school let
out for the summer and I began the adjustment from a city boy to country
bumpkin. It was no easy task, I can assure you. I missed all the conveniences of
suburbia. There were no little stores on the corner or shopping malls a short
walk from home. There weren’t any corners except farm roads and the nearest
movie was a long bike ride into town.
